Compelling Women | Learning to Pray

We all want to grow in our ability to practically live out a gospel-centered life. Compelling Women is an events-based discipleship opportunity for the women at our church to gather, discuss, and practice various topics like prayer, Scripture memorization, relationships, and more. Multiple campuses have been hosting Compelling Women events, following a "learn and do" pattern, where women learn something practical that can develop them in reflecting God's glory.

Recently, 200 women gathered at our Pelham campus on a Friday evening and Saturday morning to focus on being prayerfully dependent. They spent time learning about misconceptions and truths about prayer as well as practical ways to engage in prayer moment by moment, rather than day by day. Women worshiped together, prayed together, processed what they were learning, and participated in some creative ways to pray for our church.

Here is what a few ladies shared with us about the weekend:

“I learned how to pray. It’s that simple. As someone who didn’t really grow up in faith, it wasn’t something we did. I didn’t know how to pray. I’ve been using what I learned since, and my relationship with the Father has strengthened.”

“The material on lamenting was key for me in my current circumstances. I'd not previously had language for the true deep sadness that has clouded some of my family relationships over the past several months, and to learn I can express it simply as sadness was freeing.”

One unique way women prayed was while collaborating on a painting project. Each person filled in part of the painting, and the color they used represented a topic of prayer: generosity, parenting, gratitude, and more. As they filled out the painting, women actively prayed for their topic. What a beautiful image of God’s people coming together to express dependence on him in all things!
