God Reveals Himself

In the midst of Moses’ obscurity and failure, God appears to him on Mt. Sinai. God makes himself approachable to Moses, comforting him and assuring him of his covenant identity; yet God also reveals his holiness, declaring his name—Yahweh, “I Am Who I Am”—and commissioning Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery.

Study Questions

Application

  1. Do you have a sense of settled identity and belonging among the people of God? Why or why not?

  2. If you struggle with feeling that your life is meaningless or insignificant, how can Moses’ lengthy wilderness experience and subsequent encounter with God encourage you?

  3. In what ways have you seen God take the instruments of oppression in your life—sin or painful circumstances—and turn them into tools of liberation?

Key Points

  • Administration changes and new earthly rulers cannot provide the solutions and better life we’re looking for.

  • God does not act arbitrarily. He has purposes and plans, even for our suffering, and he does not explain or justify his ways to anyone.

  • Moses had to stop being important in the world before God could reveal himself to him.

  • The gospel means that we can rest in how broken we are because God has come and stooped to us, humbling himself and suffering oppression to identify with us.
