Jesus’ message to the believers at Thyatira holds both comfort and a challenge. He sees their love for one another and spiritual growth, yet they lack the courage to stand up to a false teacher among them. May we hold fast to the truth even in the face of opposition.

Study Questions

Application

  1. True spiritual growth is revealed through our works. Reflect on your growth over the past few years—what can you thank God for? Where can you continue to grow?

  2. We are called to oppose false ideas within our church body. What might keep you from addressing a sin issue you are aware of in someone else’s life?

  3. Our job is to hold fast to the truth until Jesus returns. What does that look like in your day-to-day life?

Key Points

  • God sees what we’re really doing. This is both a challenge and a comfort to us.

  • Satan’s goal is to incite infidelity by the threat of suffering and the thrill of seduction.

  • The believers at Thyatira were living private lives of obedience but not taking a stand against someone leading God’s people astray.

  • Sin may not seem destructive in the short term, and God is patient, but there will be a final reckoning. God will true things up.

  • We cannot say we follow Jesus and also live in the world on our own terms.

  • Our job is not to conquer all evil in the world. Our job is to hold fast and be faithful to the end.
