Application

  1. What experiences have you had that reveal the Spirit’s presence inside you? Do you simply call yourself a Christian, or have you experienced radical life change—spiritual rebirth?

  2. How do you make space and time to actively listen to God’s Spirit? If you have felt too preoccupied to hear the Spirit recently, what things might you need to rearrange or let go of to create margin and hear his voice?

  3. In what ways has the Spirit been prompting you to “win by losing”? That is, what is something you’ve been unwilling to give up in order to honor or obey God?

Key Points

  • Christians are followers of a crucified Lord. If we are preoccupied with strength, success, and power, we cannot imitate Christ, who won our greatest victory by losing.

  • Without God’s Spirit, no one can understand God’s ways. By his Spirit, he makes his mind and heart known to us.

  • God’s people don’t have to be afraid of judgment from those who don’t have the Spirit.

  • The Spirit reveals himself through God’s Word, through other Spirit-filled people (the Church), and through individual conviction.
