As God continues to send plagues against Egypt, Pharaoh acknowledges the power of Yahweh. But his remorse quickly reveals itself as fake repentance—a desire for relief followed by ongoing sin. If we are to be people who spread God’s fame, we must deny ourselves and truly repent by obeying God’s will and pursuing holiness.

Study Questions

Application

  1. What is a sin pattern you are trying to manage on your own? Who is a spiritual authority in your life to whom you can confess and obey in taking steps towards true repentance?

  2. Is there someone whose cycle of sin you are blaming yourself for or trying to rescue them from? What kind of boundaries might you need to establish to give them space to experience godly sorrow and repentance?

  3. What practices of self-denial could you establish to help you pursue holiness?

Key Points

  • God shows mercy in the midst of his judgment. Our repentance starts with God’s willingness to extend mercy to us.

  • Confession without repentance is empty; true repentance requires movement and change.

  • A mark of spiritual maturity is fearing God more than we love our sin.

  • God calls us to prioritize our holiness over our freedom and entitlement.

  • Sanctification is a lifelong process of choosing everyday to turn from sin.
