During the first Passover, God gave specific instructions to his people that, if obeyed, would protect them from the final plague on Egypt: the death of all the firstborn sons. The blood of a spotless lamb would cause the Destroyer to pass over the homes it marked, just as Jesus’ blood protects God’s people from his judgment against our sin.

Study Questions

Application

  1. When God gives you direction, do you tend to respond quickly or to delay obedience? What is something God is calling you to move on today?

  2. Describe a personal experience with God that reoriented your life toward him. If you haven’t had this kind of experience, ask God to humble you by revealing himself to you in a life-changing way.

Key Points

  • Whenever God manifests his kingly power and authority, there is both blessing and cursing.

  • God uses our steady, persistent obedience over time to reveal himself through us and draw others to him.

  • When God repeatedly makes himself known and we repeatedly harden our hearts against him, we risk getting to a place where we can no longer repent.

  • For those who are under the Blood, the Destroyer is their Deliverer. The Passover was a foreshadow of Jesus’ sacrifice, which protects us from God’s wrath if we receive Christ as he offers himself.
