In this letter to the church at Ephesus, we get a powerful image of Jesus’ authority and love. We also get the opportunity to look into the mirror of God’s Word, examine our own hearts, and respond to both the comfort and conviction we find in encountering Jesus.

Study Questions

Application

  1. If Jesus were to write you a letter of encouragement and correction, what areas of your life would he address?

  2. How can you grow in your ability to discern good and evil—both within your own heart and in your immediate context?

  3. Jesus calls us to return to our first love, to infuse new passion into our spiritual lives. What are some practical steps you take to do that?

Key Points

  • John paints a picture of Jesus’ supreme power as well as his proximity to his people. Because he is both powerful and attuned, we need not fear.

  • Jesus knows everything we think and do. This should bring us both comfort and conviction.

  • The believers at Ephesus are encouraged for their hard work, discernment, and perseverance. Yet they are rebuked for losing their first love.

  • If we resist the Spirit or become distracted, we can become spiritually deaf.

  • God will reward our hard work and suffering. His plan is to draw us to himself and give us life.
