Listen to our Newsletter

Over the past few years, we have explored meaningful topics together through our newsletter, in series like the Fruit of the Spirit and Choosing Truth Over Lies. I’ve learned so much, and at times God has used these newsletters to challenge and convict me. But I’m convinced that no topic is more important than getting to know God himself.

That is why I’m excited to begin a new series together: The Attributes of God.

Knowing who God is—his attributes, character, and nature—affects every area of our lives. A. W. Tozer wrote, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” What we believe about God shapes everything else. When our view of him is small, unclear, or distorted, it affects the way we face life. But as we grow in our understanding of who God truly is, it begins to transform the way we think, respond, and live.

The beautiful truth is that God has revealed himself to us. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture shows us who he is. As we open our Bibles, we discover his character displayed through his words, his promises, and his actions throughout history. Page after page, we see a God who desires to be known.

And this knowledge of God matters deeply for the challenges we face every day. As women, we often wrestle with anxiety, discouragement, the desire to control outcomes, and the pressure of responsibilities, sometimes carrying too much, sometimes struggling to know what we should take responsibility for and the complexity of relationships. When we focus only on our circumstances, it is easy to feel overwhelmed or stuck. But knowing who God is helps reshape how we walk through those struggles. It frees us to live out our calling as female image bearers in freedom and strength, with both confidence and dependence on him. In doing so, we embrace our God-given design as essential counterparts, uniquely created to reflect his image and walk alongside others in his purposes.

I have experienced this personally. Recently, I have been navigating tension and conflict in a relationship with someone I care deeply about. At times, my mind gets stuck replaying conversations, what was said, what hurt, and how things might move forward. I find myself worrying about what I should say next or whether the relationship can be restored. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and trapped in my own thoughts.

But when I pause and remind myself of who God is, my perspective begins to shift. When I remember that God is sovereign, I can release the need to control the outcome. When I remember that God is faithful, I can trust that he will be with me (and her) through this situation and will guide us as we work on the relationship. When I remember that he is just, I can let go of the desire to hold grudges or demand fairness on my own terms. Focusing on his character helps me step back from my limited perspective and see the situation through the lens of who God is and what he can do.

Knowing God doesn’t remove the tension or the struggle, but it changes how I face it.

As we begin this series, we will explore different attributes of God. Some of these are communicable attributes, qualities that humans can reflect in a limited way, such as love, mercy, goodness, and justice. Others are incommunicable attributes, qualities that belong to God alone—such as his omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence. These attributes are what make God, God. They are his distinguishing features that only he possesses.

As we study the attributes of God together in the coming months, my prayer is that this will be more than just an intellectual exercise. I hope that as we grow in our understanding of who he is, our hearts will grow in trust, our anxieties will begin to loosen their grip, and our lives will increasingly reflect the beauty of the One we are learning to know.

Read:

One main way we learn about the character of God is through his Word. Read this passage and write down the attributes of God you find in this familiar story and these two Psalms.

1 Samuel 17–18

Psalm 23

Psalm 146

You may notice that this Psalm uses the word “helper” in verse 5. This is the same word that is used in Genesis 2:18 when the Lord created Eve as a helper for Adam. If God has empowered us as women to lend strength to those around us, how much more powerful is limitless Yahweh when he offers his strength to us?

Reflection:

Have you ever tried to describe a close friend to someone else? It can be tricky and yet energizing to find the right words to paint an accurate picture! If you had to explain to someone what God is like, what would you say? What or who has shaped this view?

What are some false views of God that have been portrayed or taught in the culture, your family and friends, or even the church? How does that impact the way people live and act?

What in your life feels overwhelming or hard right now? Where are you feeling worried or lacking control? How does who God is—his character and attributes—bring you hope and strength?

Where is your view of God different from the way he has revealed himself to us in the Word? Ask God to bring to light these areas through this newsletter series. Ask him to reveal to you who he is so we may worship him and live our lives to glorify him.
