Psalm 39:1-13

Psalm 39:1-13

Scripture

I said to myself, ā€œI will watch what I doĀ Ā Ā Ā
and not sin in what I say.I will hold my tongueĀ Ā Ā Ā
when the ungodly are around me.ā€
Ā
But as I stood there in silence—
not even speaking of good things—
the turmoil within me grew worse.
Ā
The more I thought about it,Ā Ā Ā Ā
the hotter I got,Ā Ā Ā Ā
igniting a fire of words:
Ā
ā€œLord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Remind me that my days are numbered—
how fleeting my life is.
Ā
You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand.Ā Ā Ā Ā
My entire lifetime is just a moment to you;Ā Ā Ā Ā
at best, each of us is but a breath.ā€Ā
Ā
We are merely moving shadows,Ā Ā Ā Ā
and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth,Ā Ā Ā Ā
not knowing who will spend it.

And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?Ā Ā Ā Ā
My only hope is in you.
Ā
Rescue me from my rebellion.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Do not let fools mock me.
Ā
I am silent before you; I won’t say a word,Ā Ā Ā Ā
for my punishment is from you.
But please stop striking me!Ā Ā Ā Ā
I am exhausted by the blows from your hand.
Ā
When you discipline us for our sins,Ā Ā Ā Ā
you consume like a moth what is precious to us.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Each of us is but a breath.Ā
Ā
Hear my prayer, OĀ Lord!Ā Ā Ā Ā
Listen to my cries for help!Ā Ā Ā Ā
Don’t ignore my tears. For I am your guest—
a traveler passing through,Ā Ā Ā Ā
as my ancestors were before me.
Ā
Leave me alone so I can smile againĀ Ā Ā Ā
before I am gone and exist no more.
