The Corinthians were marked by self-sufficiency and pride in their identity as Roman citizens—characteristics that bled into the congregation of the Corinthian church. From the beginning of his letter, Paul urges them to instead be people who identify Jesus as Lord, who call on him in dependence, and who pursue unity in their body.

Study Questions

Application

  1. When you have moments or seasons of weakness, how do you tend to respond? Do you fall into despair, try to push through on your own, or call out to Jesus? What would it look like to lean into your weakness and depend on him?

  2. Have you seen the gospel transform someone’s life? If so, take some time to encourage them by sharing how you’ve seen them grow. If not, who can you move towards in love with the message of salvation?

  3. In what ways is your life marked by similarity to your birth culture instead of alignment with Christ’s Kingdom? What is one thing you need to surrender to Jesus as your Lord that will make more room for him to transform you?

Key Points

  • As Christians, our identity is not centered around our birth location but around the calling God has placed on us.

  • Holiness is a gift God works in us, not something we earn for ourselves.

  • God’s positional authority over us gives us peace.

  • Faith comes by seeing the power of God on display, not by having all our questions answered.

  • Difficulties in life are part of the human condition and point us to our need for a savior.

  • When we pursue petty conflict, we divide Christ’s body. God calls us to “live in harmony with each other.”
