1 Samuel 16:1-13
1 Samuel 16:1-13
Scripture
1Ā Now theĀ LordĀ said to Samuel, āYou have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel, so fill your flask with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to be my king.ā
2Ā But Samuel asked, āHow can I do that? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.ā
āTake a heifer with you,ā theĀ LordĀ replied, āand say that you have come to make a sacrifice to theĀ Lord.Ā 3Ā Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you which of his sons to anoint for me.ā
4Ā So Samuel did as theĀ LordĀ instructed. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town came trembling to meet him. āWhatās wrong?ā they asked. āDo you come in peace?ā
5Ā āYes,ā Samuel replied. āI have come to sacrifice to theĀ Lord. Purify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.ā Then Samuel performed the purification rite for Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice, too.
6Ā When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, āSurely this is theĀ Lordās anointed!ā
7Ā But theĀ LordĀ said to Samuel, āDonāt judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. TheĀ LordĀ doesnāt see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but theĀ LordĀ looks at the heart.ā
8Ā Then Jesse told his son Abinadab to step forward and walk in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, āThis is not the one theĀ LordĀ has chosen.āĀ 9Ā Next Jesse summoned Shimea,Ā but Samuel said, āNeither is this the one theĀ LordĀ has chosen.āĀ 10Ā In the same way all seven of Jesseās sons were presented to Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, āTheĀ LordĀ has not chosen any of these.āĀ 11Ā Then Samuel asked, āAre these all the sons you have?ā
āThere is still the youngest,ā Jesse replied. āBut heās out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.ā
āSend for him at once,ā Samuel said. āWe will not sit down to eat until he arrives.ā
12Ā So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes.
And theĀ LordĀ said, āThis is the one; anoint him.ā
13Ā So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of theĀ LordĀ came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.
