1 Samuel 3:1-21

1 Samuel 3:1-21

Scripture

1 Meanwhile, the boy Samuel served theĀ LordĀ by assisting Eli. Now in those days messages from theĀ LordĀ were very rare, and visions were quite uncommon.
2Ā One night Eli, who was almost blind by now, had gone to bed.Ā 3Ā The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was sleeping in the Tabernacle near the Ark of God.Ā 4Ā Suddenly theĀ LordĀ called out, ā€œSamuel!ā€
ā€œYes?ā€ Samuel replied. ā€œWhat is it?ā€Ā 5Ā He got up and ran to Eli. ā€œHere I am. Did you call me?ā€
ā€œI didn’t call you,ā€ Eli replied. ā€œGo back to bed.ā€ So he did.
6Ā Then theĀ LordĀ called out again, ā€œSamuel!ā€
Again Samuel got up and went to Eli. ā€œHere I am. Did you call me?ā€
ā€œI didn’t call you, my son,ā€ Eli said. ā€œGo back to bed.ā€
7Ā Samuel did not yet know theĀ LordĀ because he had never had a message from theĀ LordĀ before.Ā 8Ā So theĀ LordĀ called a third time, and once more Samuel got up and went to Eli. ā€œHere I am. Did you call me?ā€
Then Eli realized it was theĀ LordĀ who was calling the boy.Ā 9Ā So he said to Samuel, ā€œGo and lie down again, and if someone calls again, say, ā€˜Speak,Ā Lord, your servant is listening.ā€™ā€ So Samuel went back to bed.
10Ā And theĀ LordĀ came and called as before, ā€œSamuel! Samuel!ā€
And Samuel replied, ā€œSpeak, your servant is listening.ā€
11Ā Then theĀ LordĀ said to Samuel, ā€œI am about to do a shocking thing in Israel.Ā 12Ā I am going to carry out all my threats against Eli and his family, from beginning to end.Ā 13Ā I have warned him that judgment is coming upon his family forever, because his sons are blaspheming God and he hasn’t disciplined them.Ā 14Ā So I have vowed that the sins of Eli and his sons will never be forgiven by sacrifices or offerings.ā€
15Ā Samuel stayed in bed until morning, then got up and opened the doors of the Tabernacle as usual. He was afraid to tell Eli what theĀ LordĀ had said to him.Ā 16Ā But Eli called out to him, ā€œSamuel, my son.ā€
ā€œHere I am,ā€ Samuel replied.
17Ā ā€œWhat did theĀ LordĀ say to you? Tell me everything. And may God strike you and even kill you if you hide anything from me!ā€Ā 18Ā So Samuel told Eli everything; he didn’t hold anything back. ā€œIt is theĀ Lord’s will,ā€ Eli replied. ā€œLet him do what he thinks best.ā€
19Ā As Samuel grew up, theĀ LordĀ was with him, and everything Samuel said proved to be reliable.Ā 20Ā And all Israel, from Dan in the north to Beersheba in the south, knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of theĀ Lord.Ā 21Ā TheĀ LordĀ continued to appear at Shiloh and gave messages to Samuel there at the Tabernacle.
