John 1:40-51
Andrew, Simon Peterās brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, āWe have found the Messiahā (which means āChristā).
Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, āYour name is Simon, son of Johnābut you will be called Cephasā (which means āPeterā).
The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, āCome, follow me.ā Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peterās hometown.
Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, āWe have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.ā
āNazareth!ā exclaimed Nathanael. āCan anything good come from Nazareth?ā
āCome and see for yourself,ā Philip replied.
As they approached, Jesus said, āNow here is a genuine son of Israelāa man of complete integrity.ā
āHow do you know about me?ā Nathanael asked.
Jesus replied, āI could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.ā
Then Nathanael exclaimed, āRabbi, you are the Son of Godāthe King of Israel!ā
Jesus asked him, āDo you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.ā Then he said, āI tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.ā
