Advent Reading 8
Scripture
Loving Jesus means we follow Jesus' example by loving others sacrificially.
John 13:1-17
Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end. It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciplesā feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.
When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, āLord, are you going to wash my feet?ā
Jesus replied, āYou donāt understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.ā
āNo,ā Peter protested, āyou will never ever wash my feet!ā
Jesus replied, āUnless I wash you, you wonāt belong to me.ā
Simon Peter exclaimed, āThen wash my hands and head as well, Lord, not just my feet!ā
Jesus replied, āA person who has bathed all over does not need to wash, except for the feet, to be entirely clean. And you disciples are clean, but not all of you.ā For Jesus knew who would betray him. That is what he meant when he said, āNot all of you are clean.ā
After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, āDo you understand what I was doing? You call me āTeacherā and āLord,ā and you are right, because thatās what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each otherās feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.
John 15:9-17
āI have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Fatherās commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down oneās life for oneās friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesnāt confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. You didnāt choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. This is my command: Love each other.
