Advent Reading 5
Advent Reading 5
Scripture
Jesus predicted hisĀ own resurrection long before his death and offers eternal life to hisĀ followers.
John 2:13-22
It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money. Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changersā coins over the floor, and turned over their tables. Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, āGet these things out of here. Stop turning my Fatherās house into a marketplace!ā
Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: āPassion for Godās house will consume me.ā
But the Jewish leaders demanded, āWhat are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.ā
āAll right,ā Jesus replied. āDestroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.ā
āWhat!ā they exclaimed. āIt has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?ā But when Jesus said āthis temple,ā he meant his own body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said.
John 5:24-27
āI tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.
āAnd I assure you that the time is coming, indeed itās here now, when the dead will hear my voiceāthe voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live. The Father has life in himself, and he has granted that same life-giving power to his Son. And he has given him authority to judge everyone because he is the Son of Man."
