Wisdom and Work
Teaching Pastor; Staff Governing Elder; Staff Director
Key Points
Biblical wisdom refuses to give in to the illusion that we can control our joy through human means.
Work and the fruit it produces are both gifts from God. (Eccl 2:24-26)
We need to reject presumption in times of plenty and work while we can. We work for the day when life will be difficult and for those who can’t. (Prov 6:6-11)
We should labor for the favor of God. (Psalm 90)
Big Ideas
Human labor cannot guarantee permanence.
Satisfaction must be received from God.
Joy is a gift, not an achievement.
Main Passage Excerpt:
Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up?
