Wisdom and Parenting
Downtown Campus Pastor
Key Points
Our goal as parents is for our kids to grow in ancient wisdom.
Disciplining our kids leads them toward humility and wisdom.
To love our children is to discipline them. God disciplines those he loves—a model for parents who love their children.
Human beings are made in God’s image, yet are infected by sin and prone to folly. Discipline is painful, but it is a tool that yields wisdom and promotes what is good for us.
Training, restraint, and obedience bring joy to our lives. A lack of restraint leads to destructive consequences.
Parents need to engage kids through both connection and correction.
Application
Parents need community (to share with and learn from one another).
Parents can repent (even if it means apologizing to their kids when necessary).
Do not parent out of fear.
Parents need to evaluate time allocation.
Parents need to celebrate what we want repeated.
Main Passage Excerpt:
To discipline a child produces wisdom, but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child. When the wicked are in authority, sin flourishes, but the godly will live to see their downfall. Discipline your children, and they will give you peace of mind and will make your heart glad.
