Key Points

  • Confession is about words. Repentance is about actions. Confession happens in a moment. Repentance happens over time.

  • As the brothers return to Egypt, Joseph tests them by giving them every reason and opportunity to abandon Benjamin. Judah speaks up—unwilling to let that happen—and offers himself as a substitute for Benjamin.

In this moment, Judah reaches a place that Jesus, Paul, and Peter repeatedly reiterate: Some things are more important than life.

  • Judah’s history of sin against Joseph and Tamar shows who he was before. In this moment, his actions prove his repentance. They depict the kind of transformation and new life we can experience through the gospel.
So many of us have walked a path, pursuing our own version of “life,” and have reached a point where we need to die to our old way of life. Initially, repentance feels like “death.” It feels like death, but in the end it leads to life.

Application

  • For believers: Any sacrifice we make now will be far outweighed by the rewards to come.

  • For unbelievers: Consider repenting and becoming a follower of Christ. If it seems that Christians aren’t what this story depicts, the story still shows what Christians aspire to be.
