Jeremiah 17:5-18

Jeremiah 17:5-18

Scripture

5Ā This is what theĀ LordĀ says:
ā€œCursed are those who put their trust in mere humans,Ā Ā Ā Ā
who rely on human strengthĀ Ā Ā Ā
and turn their hearts away from theĀ Lord.
6Ā They are like stunted shrubs in the desert,Ā Ā Ā Ā
with no hope for the future.
They will live in the barren wilderness,Ā Ā Ā Ā
in an uninhabited salty land.
7Ā ā€œBut blessed are those who trust in theĀ LordĀ Ā Ā Ā
and have made theĀ LordĀ their hope and confidence.
8Ā They are like trees planted along a riverbank,Ā Ā Ā Ā
with roots that reach deep into the water.
Such trees are not bothered by the heatĀ Ā Ā Ā
or worried by long months of drought.
Their leaves stay green,Ā Ā Ā Ā
and they never stop producing fruit.
9Ā ā€œThe human heart is the most deceitful of all things,Ā Ā Ā Ā
and desperately wicked.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Who really knows how bad it is?
10Ā But I, theĀ Lord, search all heartsĀ Ā Ā Ā
and examine secret motives.
I give all people their due rewards,Ā Ā Ā Ā
according to what their actions deserve.ā€

11Ā Like a partridge that hatches eggs she has not laid,Ā Ā Ā Ā
so are those who get their wealth by unjust means.
At midlife they will lose their riches;Ā Ā Ā Ā
in the end, they will become poor old fools.
12Ā But we worship at your throne—
eternal, high, and glorious!
13Ā OĀ Lord, the hope of Israel,Ā Ā Ā Ā
all who turn away from you will be disgraced.
They will be buried in the dust of the earth,Ā Ā Ā Ā
for they have abandoned theĀ Lord, the fountain of living water.
14Ā OĀ Lord, if you heal me, I will be truly healed;Ā Ā Ā Ā
if you save me, I will be truly saved.Ā Ā Ā Ā
My praises are for you alone!
15Ā People scoff at me and say,
ā€œWhat is this ā€˜message from theĀ Lord’ you talk about?Ā Ā Ā Ā
Why don’t your predictions come true?ā€
16Ā Lord, I have not abandoned my jobĀ Ā Ā Ā
as a shepherd for your people.
I have not urged you to send disaster.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You have heard everything I’ve said.
17Ā Lord, don’t terrorize me!Ā Ā Ā Ā
You alone are my hope in the day of disaster.
18Ā Bring shame and dismay on all who persecute me,Ā Ā Ā Ā
but don’t let me experience shame and dismay.
Bring a day of terror on them.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Yes, bring double destruction upon them!
